The surfaces in your bathroom must be
moisture-tolerant and should also be easy to clean and
maintain.
Any surface material for a tub or shower
surround should be applied on top of water-resistant wall
material.
Types of Shower
Surrounds available
- Prefabricated
surrounds. Various manufacturers offer prefab
surrounds made of fiberglass, acrylic, vinyl, plastic
laminate, or synthetic stone. When remodeling, avoid
buying a one-piece surround (typically made of molded
fiberglass) unless you choose asurround unit
that can be transported into the bathroom through
available openings. Multipiece surround kits, which
can be assembled inside the bathroom, are a better
option for existing homes.
- Solid-surface
materials. Nothing beats this smooth acrylic
surface for ease in cleaning, and the material lasts a
lifetime. Solid-surface tub and shower kits offer easy
installation. These bath suround and shower surround
kits generally consist of precut panels and curved
corner moldings. They are designed to go with standard
bath fixtures; nonstandard bath surround installations
require professional help.
- Ceramic
tile is waterproof, durable, and easy to
maintain. One drawback: The bath tile grout can
mildew, making it difficult to clean. Small mosaic
bath tiles should come bonded to sheets of 1x1-foot or
1x2-foot fiber mesh. These sheets go up faster than
loose bath tiles. Pre-grouted sheets of 4-inch-square
bath tiles have flexible synthetic bath tile grouting.
You stick the sheets to the substrate surface first,
then apply a thin bead of caulk around the edges.
Acrylic tub and shower surrounds and
from American Bath are attractively priced.
Additional Bath
Surround and Shower Surround BathRoom remodeling elements
to consider
- Consider having
warming strips installed underneath your new bath tile
or marble BathRoom floor; they use very little
electricity and will chase away cold feet.
- Avoid bath and
shower laminates with a wood-based core.
Features to consider
- Choose
mildew-resistant paint.
- Use
moisture-resistant wallpaper for best results.
- If you want to
install mirrors in wet areas, use only mirrors made from
acrylic tile.
Cost guidelines
Paint is the least expensive wall covering
option; wallpaper is next, and mirrors are also relatively
inexpensive. Solid surfacing is relatively expensive.
Ceramic tile can be moderately priced, if you choose from
stock selections, or expensive if you choose designer
styles.
Countertops to Count On
Types available
- Plastic
laminate is the most widely used bathroom
counter material. It's available in many colors,
patterns, and textures. On the downside, laminate can
burn, wear thin, and dull over time. Hard blows can
chip or dent it, and there's no remedy short of
replacement.
- Ceramic
tile is available in many colors, designs, and
finishes. Grout lines that trap dirt and attract
mildew can be troublesome, but new grouts and sealers
help alleviate these problems. Getting professional
results with tile is a challenge for
do-it-yourselfers.
- Solid-surface
countertops offer many of the advantages of stone with
few of the drawbacks. Cast from acrylic resin, this
surface requires little maintenance and is extremely
durable. Solid-surface material is available in white,
beige, pastels, and imitation stone.
- Marble
and granite are unrivalled for their beauty,
but marble stains easily and granite can be stained by
greasy products, such as makeup.
- Cultured
marble consists of chips of natural marble
embedded in plastic. It's easy to clean but must be
well cared for. Once scratched, it cannot be
resurfaced.
- Wood
is an attractive, versatile, and easy-to-install
surface. It is also extremely vulnerable to water
damage, and its porosity makes it hard to keep clean.
All wood must be well sealed with polyurethane or
marine varnish for bathroom use. Special care should
be taken to seal around the edges of plumbing fixtures
so standing water can't seep in and cause wood rot.
Features to consider
- If your choice is
ceramic tile, using pregrouted tile sheets or sheets of
mosaic tile on a mesh backing makes it easier to space
tiles evenly—making do-it-yourself installation more
realistic (or reducing the time needed by, and therefore
the cost of, pro installers).
- If you're
considering maple butcher block for a wood countertop,
be aware that it is thicker than standard tops, so you
may need to modify plumbing connections in order to
install it.
- Although cabinets
and countertops typically come from separate
manufacturers, it's a good idea to buy them from the
same supplier to ensure a proper fit.
Ceramic tile costs $10 to $40 a running
foot, installed. The range for plastic laminate is $24 to
$50 per running foot. A wood counter will cost between $25
and $40, although your cost may run higher if you need pro
plumbing assistance to seal and fit the counter.
Solid-surface material costs $100 to $250 a
running foot, installed. Be aware that some solid-surface
manufacturers require that a trained professional install
their material. Marble and granite countertops can range
from $125 to $250 per running foot. If a solid sheet of
stone is beyond your budget, consider granite or marble
tiles, which will cost less. Cultured marble is another
cost-saving option, at $50 to $80 a running foot,
installed.

History of American Bath Enterprises
American Bath Enterprises (ABE) was founded in 1991 with the goal of making the bath surround installation and replacement of bathtub enclosure and shower wall surrounds easier and more affordable. Over time, ABE noted that bath and shower surround bathroom renovation customers often complained about how difficult bath tile was to keep clean, how difficult it was to install bath and shower surround and bathroom remodeling materials and how often their bath enclosures and shower surrounds broke.
Bath Tile has been around for thousands of years, but American Bath Enterprises (ABE) felt it was time for a all-inclusive bath and shower surround revolution. American Bath Enterprises has achieved its goal by developing a comprehensive line of AmeriWall™ thermally formed acrylic bathtub and shower enclosure wall kits, PLUS a bathroom window kit that reduces damage to bath window seals. The shower surround design elements, bath materials and glossy acrylic finish of the AmeriWall™ bathtub surround and shower enclosures are the culmination of years of bath product experience and extensive shower surround customer feedback.
With the development of AmeriWall™, American Bath Enterprises (ABE) has created a less expensive, universally applicable bathtub surround and shower enclosure system that replaces grouted bath tile, vulnerable shower fiberglass and other bathroom enclosure materials commonly used with stronger, more durable bathroom surrounds constructed into quickly assembled bath surround systems.
Now available as two-wall bath surrounds and three-wall bath tub surround enclosures that meet virtually every kind of bathtub surround and shower wall surround need, AmeriWall™
bathtub and shower surround enclosure wall kits are fabricated using a proprietary manufacturing process that combines two sheets of permanently bonded, thermally formed acrylic.
To make the shower walls and bathroom surround systems easier to install and more rigid during and after the mounting process, AmeriWall™ bath enclosures are designed with an interlocking and overlapping bathroom surround channel designs. Every bath surround kit comes with complete, easy-to-follow bath and shower surround installation instructions that eliminate guesswork and minimize bath tub and shower downtime.
To install American Bath Enterprises bath and shower surround enclosures over prepped Sheetrock, green board or other approved bathroom materials and after you have installed all plumbing, all that an American Bath Enterprises customer needs is their unpacked AmeriWall™ bathroom surround product, some glue, some bath caulk, a few simple tools and about an hour of time. It's really that simple and no bath grout means no attraction for bath mold or bath mildew.
